Who am I as an artist? I like creating something new and refreshing that inspires others to do the same. I’m currently a sophomore at School of Visual Arts in New York, where I’m majoring in 3D animation and VFX. Being in this major offers me the opportunity to explore the latest 3D programs that empower my creativity, as well as improve my skills around developing objects and characters. My goals are to bring my personal projects to life, work with other 3D animators, develop video games, and eventually create my own TV series.
In my digital work, I explore visually vibrant colors, and create original characters and environments in a variety of linework styles. Some of my artwork has mixed media elements, including 2D and 3D photographic elements. Most of the characters I create are non-human, such as anthropomorphic animals, robots, and aliens. I create these types of characters because they interest me, and I become my best creative self when experimenting with such characters. My work is inspired by a variety of cartoons, movies, video games, internet animation, and music. For example, one of my favorite movies is “Wall-E,” and I’m inspired by the Nintendo game “Nintendogs plus Cats,” both of which sparked my interest in creating robots and animals. Studying 3D and VFX has helped me acquire the creative vision to combine different forms of media to create a unique style, which I’d describe as a mixture of 2D characters and 3D backgrounds. Whether I’m adding a 2D drawing of a character in a 3D background, or a 3D model of a character in a photographic background with 2D props, my style is always unique.
My strongest skills are in character animation and 3D modeling. However, I enjoy character animation the most because it’s fun to watch the character’s movements take shape. I believe my character models are good and have improved since my first robot model, as over time, I’ve updated the models to blend in better with my 2D drawings. In the future, I would like to keep improving my character rigging skills with more advanced controls through Autodesk Maya. After I got accepted to this School of Visual Arts, I learned a free 3D program called Blender and used a student license for Maya, so that before even attending my first class, I had most of the knowledge to make school assignments easier. Blender is my preference over Maya, because Blender includes features like grease pencil.
Being in the School of Visual Arts has been a great experience so far—in my classes, I’ve learned software programs such as After Effects, Adobe Illustrator, and Nuke. I can’t wait to keep learning and challenge myself as a 3D and VFX major at SVA.
